Winter Tree & Shrub Identification
This class is currently full.
Take a closer look at the intricate traits of trees and shrubs!
Saturday, February 24th 1p - 2:30p | 2355 Old Penitentiary Rd
In this beginner’s plant identification class, learn the basics of winter twig identification with IBG Collections Curator Daniel Murphy.
Having shed their leaves in the fall, deciduous trees and shrubs spend the winter displaying their skeletal structure. From a distance, a mess of bare branches doesn’t look like much; however, upon closer inspection, a suite of characteristics unique to each species reveals itself!
Even without their leaves, trees and shrubs can be identified simply by observing their twigs and noticing features such as color, shape, buds, leaf scars, and branching pattern.
Note: Class will meet for 45 minutes inside the classroom and will be outdoors for 45 minutes. Please come dressed for the weather.
Bike walk, skate, or carpool. We love our planet and we love it when our guests use alternative forms of transportation. But if driving is a must, here are some directions!
